Bezold Effect gouache on watercolor paper each square is 5X5 inches
From Design II. The assignment called for us to create a design and then do two paintings of it using identical colors. Then outline one of the designs in white and the other in black. This created the Bezold Effect, an optical illusion named after the man who discovered it, Wilhelm von Bezold. This effect shows that colors can appear different when next to other colors.
William Morris, and other members of the Arts & Crafts Movement, utilized the Bezold Effect in the printing of their designs so that the end product looked to be printed from more colors than were actually there.
The original design was by the Roycrofters, an offshoot of the Arts & Crafts movement. I tweaked the design a little here and there and changed it a bit to fit neatly in a square. Each one was painted in the exact same colors. The only difference between the two is the black and white.
Very interesting, I haven't heard of that before. I showed the image to my father who didn't believe that they were the same images so I proved it by copying and pasting parts of it in Paint. I'm going to fav this so I can keep the effect in mind...who knows when it might come in useful
This is very interesting. I am going to try it just for kicks. What fun! By the way, I like the design.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
