1955 Pontiac Star Chief
oil on canvas, 18 X 24 inches

From four years ago. This was done in my third oil painting class. The teacher had these calendars for students to pick subjects from. I picked up a calendar and fell in love with this Pontiac. Old cars are the subject matter love of my life, and painting and drawing them is what i enjoy the most!

Blurred the edges in the background to push it back, and so the detail would not compete with the Pontiac or the Chevy. My teacher warned me about limiting my colors in the background. I did not listen and struggled to pull it off. But i ended up with cars looking like cars in front of a busy background that did not distract from the subject matter, so i was pleased with this attempt.

Comments and criticism always welcome.

The reflections on your cars are great, as are the headlights. I just love this painting, even if the cars are a bit too modern for me ;) .

I notice you've put the years on the license plates; that's one of my tricks too, haha.

Thank you! I relied heavily on the photo reference for those reflections. Believe it or not, i guessed correctly on the headlights the first time! Sweet little things like that make all the hours of trial and error worth the effort.

Yeah...i guess these cars are a bit younger than what you are used to. Those old cars from the Depression era on back are amazing! One of these days i will get around to painting cars like that. I have a cousin who has a Model A Ford in Ohio, and my wife has a cousin with a Stanley Steamer in downstate Missouri. One of these summers after school is over i am going to go after them with a sketch pad! I am not so good with straight photo reference, i had to use models of the Pontiac and Chevy to help me with this painting. So i would like to get some time to take my time with some of the older cars.

Thank you for your comments!

Whoa! That's amazing! You made the paint look so shiny and realistic!

Wow... that's a real achievement, Dan!

Wow Dan, that's amazing. You should do more of this type of work, they always have old car shows down here in Texas I have no doubt your work would be a hit. Your skill really shines in this piece...awesome stuff!

Thank you! This is what i want to do...paintings of old cars. Right now i am in school and too busy with that to paint now. Even still i am doing old cars for a sketchbook assignment, and i am doing a 1936 Auburn Boatail Speedster for a Pebble Beach vacation poster. And i have an instructor helping me to produce a professional portfolio that puts emphasis on my painting skills. So hopefully i will be making a living at it in a couple of years!
